Des Plaines river trail ride
October 19, 2013
9am

We have often done this trail in the fall because of good colors. It also gives the trail a chance to dry out. The trail is crushed limestone and packed dirt. Sometimes there are muddy spots. (This trail is not suitable for road bikes with narrow tires.) This is not a rail trail. It winds along the Des Plaines River, so it is pretty flat. The biggest hills are the bridges over roads

Starting Location:
The preserve is about 30 minutes from the Clock Tower. Head east on Golf Road. Pass Route 45 (River Road). You’ll pass the entrance for Oakton Community College, then pass under the railroad tracks. Turn right on River/Bender Road (traffic light) before you go under I-294. The preserve will be on the right in a few hundred feet. Be careful because there are several River Roads in the area. (Use Bender Rd, Des Plaines with GPS.)Big Bend Lake Forest Preserve

Distance: 25 miles
Average Speed: 10-13
